I have "no foreign fees" Chase Visa and AmEx cards, both of which are widely useable for purchases (Visa even more so) and that's where I get the best conversion rate. (Nor cash-changing euros in US to take to Europe.) The cash conversion rates tend to be the worst there is. I wouldn't recommend taking US dollars to change to euros. I don't know whether there will be fees associated with exchange rate and commision associated with the bank here. ask your bank whether they have partnered banks in spain without incurring fees. also try to find out what is the maximum equivalent amount in us dollar you can take out per day. also let your bank or card provider knows that you are coming to spain and will be using the atm (debit) and credit cards to avoid being blocked. your taxi from the airport will cost you a fixed flat fee of 30 euros to the city. I would suggest you buy some euros before your trip to spain for essentials, like maybe 50 euros or more.
